  • Wide enough for animals to move comfortably, typically 750 – 900mm for most species, but potentially wider for pigs. 
  • A level section of at least 1 meter at the top of the ramp can help animals transition onto the truck more confidently
  • Guidelines for proper lighting, alignment (north–south to prevent sun glare), material selection, and layout that facilitate calm, stress-minimized animal movement.

While AS 5340 is currently voluntary, it reflects the prevailing “state of knowledge” in workplace health and safety and animal welfare in Australia. Regulators—like WorkSafe—can now reference it when issuing notices or taking legal action.
